Our Story
During the 1990’s there was no shortage of mass hysteria over the topic of black (toxic) mold. Due
largely to the endless publicity of celebrity legal battles, horror stories of sick occupants and dying pets
and the unprecedented court settlements by some of the nation’s most prominent insurance carriers, mold became a hot topic.
This enormous surge in mold related insurance claims eventually lead to the insurance companies
excluding mold coverage from most Homeowners Policies. In doing so, the era of “mold is gold” among
the mold testing and remediation contractors came to an abrupt end and for the most part, fell into
obscurity.
This was a turning point for the Indoor Air Quality industry. The vacuum created by the mass exodus
from the mold industries left relatively few players on the bench. The good news is, that this group of
people consisted of the industry’s finest consisting of Microbiologists, PhD’s, MD’s, Chemists, Industrial Hygienists,
Laboratory technicians and scientist furthering the diagnostic and testing procedures that we have at
our disposal today. While the news worthiness of mold and building related illnesses faded to black, the
IAQ community was hard at work, bringing a new level of professionalism and integrity that was lacking
previously.
Enter Indoor Air Quality Consultants. Its founder and ACAC Certified Indoor Environmentalist, is Stephen
Myles. Mr. Myles witnessed the explosion of mold claims first hand in 2001 while handling insurance
claims for one of the nation’s most prominent insurance companies. Having previously handled thousands of claims
with over 20 years as an independent insurance adjuster, many relating to air quality such as
contamination from sewer and drain backup, Flooding, Hurricane, Wind and Hail events with ensuing
mold damage, Fire, smoke, soot and ash damage from wild fires and buildings and asbestos issues with
earthquake and storm damaged buildings.
Mr. Myles’ extensive construction background and his first hand experience with multiple Indoor Air
Quality issues laid the groundwork for IAQC. While attending a claims conference in 2011, he met a
small group of IAQ professionals that enlightened and encouraged him to apply his skills and experience
and join this new and improved industry. The rest, as they say, is history.
